Watch: Why are Southern States resisting Hindi more than others

The latest exchanges between Tamil Nadu and the Centre over Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds have reignited the long-standing language debate. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reaffirmed the State’s opposition to Hindi imposition and reiterated its commitment to the two-language policy.

We use data to understand why resistance to Hindi is stronger in the south compared to other non-Hindi-speaking states. We also use the language census data to see if Tamil Nadu or the non-Hindi States in general are more unwilling to learn and speak new languages. We also use data on development indices to see if it makes a stronger case for English as the link language over Hindi.
