As of February 17, the United States has deported 332 undocumented Indian immigrants. This number is only expected to rise. Nearly 40% of them were from Punjab, followed by Haryana and Gujarat. But, this is just one part of a much bigger story.

Data also shows that deportations of undocumented Indian immigrants have been going on for a long time. Close to 16000 people have been deported from the U.S. to India since 2009. The number of Indians attempting to enter the U.S. illegally has also surged in recent years. A decade ago, fewer than 1,500 Indians were caught at the border. In 2024, it was over 90,000.

In this video, The Hindu Data Team uses data to discuss the story of illegal Indian immigration to the U.S. and understand what’s forcing people to undertake such perilous journeys.
